The Hangaway Trail Ultra is the first ultra-distance trail running event on Panay Island, envisioned to become the largest and most prestigious race of its kind in the region. Held in the province of Antique—home of the “Hangaways”—this race honors the fierce, resilient spirit of the Antiqueños, believed to be descendants of Datu Sumakwel, one of the ten legendary Bornean Datus who settled Panay in the 13th century.

The course features a dynamic mix of technical trails, dirt and gravel roads, fire lanes, and hanging bridges. When it rains, expect muddy ascents and multiple river crossings—so come prepared to get wet. Fortunately, the fresh, cool waters offer welcome relief for tired legs and help regulate body temperature.

Participants are strongly advised to wear road-to-trail running shoes for optimal grip and comfort. For safety, all runners must walk across the two hanging bridges. Running is not permitted, as vibrations can make the bridges unstable—especially with multiple runners crossing simultaneously.

With distances from 12 km to 50 km, the Hangaway Trail Ultra welcomes all levels—from beginners to elite runners. It also helps discover and develop local talent, especially among the youth and indigenous communities in Antique and nearby areas.
